Light, bright, and strong!
I wanted bass strings of a lighter gauge for popping and slapping, so I opted for the .040-.95 Ernie Ball Extra Slinky bass strings. These bass strings certainly feel lighter than bass strings of a heavier gauge, and they allow me to pop and slap so much more easily than if I had thicker, heavier strings. They have great tone quality, too. The tone of these strings is considerably brighter sounding than the .050-.105 and even .045-.100 bass string sets by Ernie Ball. I must say, though, that while they sound brighter they are still capable of delivering the low tones when you want them; you just have to make some minor adjustments to your tone knobs or amplifier. I purchased these strings in August '10 and they still work great about a year later. I play often and they still sound "poppy" and new - just what I expect from a great company like Ernie Ball.
If you are looking for booming lows and presence in your bass, then I would probably go with strings of a thicker gauge...
