D'Addario Chromes Flatwound Bass strings are famed for their smooth feel and warm, mellow tone. The strings are wound using an outer flattened, "ribbon" wire which is then polished to a smooth finish. Chromes deliver a deep, rich low end tone that's ideal for jazz and R&B, but also has applications in contemporary pop music.
With so many on offer these days, it is great to have a name you can trust. This item is certainly that and will be a perfect buy. The distributor have added some great touches and this equals great value.

Love Flatwounds
Flatwound strings... I love the feel and the tone they provide. They are marked as "light." I checked several websites, including the D'Addario site, and it seems they do not sell any heavier gauge of 5-string sets. However the tone with these strings is anything but "light." I find they produce a really nice, warm, mellow, full-bodied tone. Very playable right from the start, I found that they have none of that "metallic" sound you get with new strings from cheaper brands.
Finally, I did have one minor problem installing them... the low B string is, naturally, very thick, and with the additional green string that was wound around the end of the metal string (the stuff to protect the two ends of the string from having sharp points sticking out), it would not fit through the bridge of my instrument. This is probably a combination of the hardware being too small, and the wrapping on the string. I had to cut off this wrapping on by the B and E strings before they would...

Smooth and Durable
I have been playing string instruments more than fifty years and so I have tried, studied and experimented with, numerous brands and types . . . I even sold strings when I was a music store manager. Therefore I feel confident that my opinion is meaningful.
D'Addario has been a premium producer of musical instrument strings for a long time and I have never been disappointed by any of their products; the ECB81 XL Chrome FLAT WOUND bass strings are excellent. The smooth texture and feel is a great benefit for two reasons, 1) The transition between several string instruments during recording sessions is easier with shorter adjustment periods, and 2) The noiseless fingering avoids rejecting a track because string noise was not acceptable. Modern processing of recorded string instruments can modify the sound of the bass so the track (or live performance) can be made to sound as bright as a round wound set of strings, so, today flat-wound strings need not complicate the...

Good strings. They have a nice warm tone. Sounds great on my Hamer cruise bass 5. It's the first time I have used flats on it and I am very happy with these and the results.
