excellent for beginner bass players
I have been playing guitar for 20+ years and was supposed to be doing that in the new band I am in. But the bassist did not show up so I gave it a go. Liked it more than I wanted to admit and ended up wanting to buy a bass guitar. Not having much money (or choice here in Vanuatu) I ended up with this one. No regrets at all, it is a fine playing and sounding bass guitar. Two volume knobs control which pick ups you want to use, with just enough difference between the 2 to be useful. The neck is a bit wider than on other bass guitars I have played, making it a bit heavier to play for my short fingers but then I am more a guitar player, so I expect to struggle a bit!

Unless you start playing like Billy Sheehan and do lots of string bending, this bass will stay well in tune and will give you lots of value for money. I enjoy it and find myself recording bass lines to (guitar-) solo over and ended up writing some tunes in the process, something I rarely do on the guitar. Jeez,...

Excellent bass, low price
This is an excellent bass, especially for the price. Has both P & J pick-ups separate volume controls for each, plus a third tone control. Seldom needs tuning. Great 24 fretboard. Light Agatha (sp?) body, but still has a nice tone. I am still a fledgling bass player, so I am not an expert. I play through a Digitech BP200 sound shaper/pedal and Hartke B30 (30-watt) practice amp, so I've never pushed any to the limits. I've read elsewhere that some competent bass players use the RBX170 as their main instrument. Yamaha guitars and basses are well known for their excellent construction and reliability. The RBX170 is no exception.
Excellent beginner instrument; still good as backup for experienced players
This is the first bass that I bought, a little over a year ago. It's the one on which I have been teaching myself, and I'm proud to own it.

The first thing to comment on is its appearance. When I took it out of the box, I thought it was beautiful; a glossy black, nice shape, and what looks like chrome hardware for the bridge. Even though I'm not very gentle with it, it still looks every bit as good as the day I opened it, aside from some minor scratches. In the sunlight, things such as fingerprints and dust become much more noticeable, but this instrument strikes me as surprisingly low-maintenance. The knobs are pretty cheap-looking (just featureless black plastic), and the tuning heads are plastic, but for the price this is still very nice. Some other reviewers say that this bass is rather light, but it seems about average weight to me.

Next is the technical performance. The bolt-on neck is tapered, and has 24 frets (two full octaves), which is good for someone...
